Psychological Abuse With Elvis

As part of my clinical counseling activities, I had to learn how to overcome the imprinting done to many of my patients who suffered from phobias and neurosis caused by the psychological abuse done to them by family, friends and community. I would like to talk about a special situation since the patient has long since passed away a euphemism for died and left no family or friends. His sole recourse to human company when living was his obsession with Elvis Presley.

He imagined when a boy that Elvis protected him.  He would invoke Elvis's name when his mother would kick him for throwing up on her clean basement.  He wrote poetry that he could swear Elvis had turned to songs.  His mental affair with Elvis was not overt.  He never even thought in a cause and effect logical thinking process that he had those beliefs.  He did those actions that others would name beliefs.  He never talked about them until he came to see me many years after his protector Elvis had passed off.

He reported to me his encounters with certain people who dared to challenge his feelings about Elvis even though he had never said Elvis was his secret protector.  On one occasion, a fellow teacher came into the teacher's lounge where he was having lunch and said, "Elvis, you said Elvis was the best romantic singer. He doesn't sing."

That made his recoil further into his shell of secrecy.  He only said that he thought Elvis could sing soft ballads as easily as the rock and roll he was famous for.

Another occasion was when he was visiting his Aunt.  Her daughter came over and said, "Elvis Presley died".  Why would her daughter know that he cared about Elvis?  There had been no conversation about Elvis or famous people.

That made him even more mute about expressing himself on any subject.

Those comments might have been comments on current events or opinions. Actually, they don't matter when it comes to psychological counseling.  What matters is how he reacted when someone outside of his mind commented about his secret, Elvis.

How he reacted is due to the psychological and physical abuse he endured from his mother and family.  That abuse influenced his interaction with community and their friends.  He inadvertently set himself up to suffer abuse like the type he got from his family and friends because of fear, in the latter, fear of people knowing about his secret protector, Elvis.

HELP ME ELVIS became no one can ever know about me and Elvis.

It helps to know how phobias and neurosis develop.  That doesn't always treat the symptoms.  Those symptoms need to be treated privately by a psychiatrist.
